One Day in Entebbe Itinerary

Entebbe is a small town on the shores of Lake Victoria in Uganda. Uganda’s main international airport is actually here, not in the capital, making it a convenient place to stop for the night. There’s not a huge amount to do around here when compared with Uganda’s incredible national parks, but one day in Entebbe is enjoyable.

Entebbe is located just 37 km southwest of Uganda’s capital, Kampala. Once the country’s capital during colonial times, Entebbe still holds significant historical and administrative importance.

As mentioned, it’s home to the Entebbe International Airport, the main gateway for international travelers into Uganda. Despite being a stone’s throw from the equator, Entebbe’s close proximity to Lake Victoria and 1,200 m altitude results in a fairly cool climate.

Uganda Wildlife Education Centre

Start your day with a visit to the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC), often referred to as the Entebbe Zoo. The center showcases some of Uganda’s rich and diverse wildlife. It’s not just a zoo but a sanctuary and rehabilitation center for animals that have been rescued from illegal trafficking or injury.

At UWEC, you can see a variety of animals, including lions, rhinos, giraffes, chimpanzees, and the prehistoric looking shoebill stork. The facility is well-maintained, and the animals are housed in spacious enclosures. If you’re interested in getting up close with the animals, UWEC offers behind-the-scenes tours where you can interact with or feed some of the animals with the trained staff.

Visiting the Wildlife Education Centre is not only an educational experience but also a way to support the conservation efforts of Uganda’s endangered species.

Botanical Garden

After a morning with the animals, head over to the Entebbe Botanical Gardens. These gardens were established in 1898 and have since become a haven for nature lovers. Spread over 40 hectares, the gardens are divided into different zones like grasslands and rainforest.

The Botanical Gardens are perfect for a leisurely walk. You can spot a variety of plant species, including indigenous and exotic trees, medicinal plants, and colorful flowers.

The gardens are also home to several bird species, making it a popular spot for birdwatching. There are healthy numbers of hornbills and marabou storks around this area.

The botanical garden also has some resident primates, you can find both black-and-white colobus monkeys and the more common vervet monkeys within the gardens.

Sunset Cruise on Lake Victoria

As the day winds down, make your way to the shores of Lake Victoria for a sunset cruise. Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa and one of the most iconic bodies of water in the world. A sunset cruise is the perfect way to relax after a day of exploration.

During the cruise, you’ll have the chance to see local fishermen at work, spot a variety of bird species, and witness the sun setting over the water—a truly breathtaking sight.

The cruises typically last about an hour or two, and it’s a great way to unwind while soaking in the natural beauty of Lake Victoria.

Whilst it’s not a standalone destination, Entebbe is worth a visit as a starting or finishing point of a larger Uganda trip. The area around Lake Victoria is incredibly beautiful and there’s enough to guarantee an enjoyable 24 hours.

Is Entebbe Better Than Kampala?

Entebbe and Kampala offer different experiences. Entebbe is quieter and more relaxed, making it better for a peaceful getaway. Kampala, on the other hand, is a busy city with a lively nightlife. If you’re looking for relaxation and nature, Entebbe is the better choice. For those interested in city life and cultural experiences, Kampala might be more appealing.

Can You Swim in Entebbe?

Swimming in Lake Victoria is not recommended due to the presence of bilharzia—also called Schistosomiasis—a parasitic disease that can be contracted in freshwater. Additionally, the lake has unpredictable currents and the occasional crocodile. Of course, some resorts have swimming pools where you can safely take a dip.

Do They Speak English in Entebbe?

Yes, English is widely spoken in Entebbe, as it is the official language of Uganda. You will have no trouble communicating with locals, especially in hotels, restaurants, and tourist sites.
